Moving into a new home can be overwhelming, especially if you are at the stage in life where you are downsizing. You will be leaving behind the memories that you created in your old home while unsure of what your new home will bring. If you are downsizing this move can become even more difficult because of the fact you will have to get rid of items that may hold memories. To help make this moving and downsizing process a little easier, follow these three steps below.
Plan Ahead
You will want to begin by going to the new place and measuring each room along with your storage area; this way you will know what you are working with in terms of available space. Next, go room by room deciding what you need to get rid of. Breaking this step down by rooms means you will not become overwhelmed thinking about the entire house. Deciding on the furniture you will be bringing is very important and you will want to decide on furniture from largest to smallest to ensure that you have enough room. Make sure you leave yourself with enough time to get rid of things as you don’t want to be rushed.
Getting Rid of Things
This can be a very difficult part of downsizing. For best results, you will have to be very strict with yourself as you are going through the rooms. You should create two piles, one you will be taking with you and one you should donate. If you have any duplicate items make sure you only bring one with you. If you’d haven’t used it for a period of time, donate it. Remember that having a “maybe” pile can make more work for you down the line because you will end up needing to make a decision at some point.
Keeping your Memories
Saving your memories will be important. If you have a number of old photos think about digitizing them to save room. If there is a piece of furniture or something else that you can’t bring with you, take a photo so you will remember it. Any family heirlooms can be passed down to family members so they can be saved. Many people are glad to take family furniture which tend to be well-built and have a history.
Downsizing can be a very emotional process for anyone. If you find yourself going through this process, it is important to be prepared and keep yourself organized throughout to make the process easier for you. As with most of the dealings throughout the home selling process, the more you do upfront, the better in the end.
